Gay Manchester

Manchester is a vibrant city in the North of England, and it is known nationwide for its acceptance and LGBTQ nightlife. Its Gay Village, based around Canal Street, is known across the world, but there are events and spaces outside of the nightlife that allow everyone to enjoy themselves, making Manchester a hub for pride and celebration in the North. The city hosts one of the biggest annual Pride events in the UK, a trans celebration weekend every Summer, and other events throughout the year.

4* LEVEN Manchester

4* LEVEN Manchester

Near Gay Nightlife, Boutique

You really couldn't position a hotel much better for Manchester’s gay scene than LEVEN Manchester, sitting on the corner of Chorlton Street and Canal Street. I nside a converted red-brick warehouse, the look is contemporary and stylish without feeling overly polished, with rooms starting at a generous 26 square metres and much larger apartment-style options available. Some include full kitchens and laundry facilities, making it particularly useful for longer stays. There is also a relaxed cocktail bar, while Piccadilly Station is only around five minutes away. You get the Gay Village literally outside while still staying somewhere that feels like a proper design hotel. GayMapper tip: A great alternative to Velvet if you want to stay directly in the Village but prefer a calmer, more contemporary apartment-hotel feel.
4* Velvet Hotel

4* Velvet Hotel

Near Gay Nightlife, Boutique

Right on Canal Street, Velvet Hotel Manchester puts you about as close to the Gay Village nightlife as it is possible to stay. The rooms and suites are individually styled with rich colours and a slightly theatrical feel, with some offering balconies and larger suites providing considerably more space. Downstairs you have the Village Brasserie and Velvet Lounge Bar, while the hotel also has a sauna. Piccadilly Station is only around five minutes away and the Northern Quarter is easily walkable. This is one to choose because you want to be part of the Village atmosphere – light sleepers should remember that Canal Street isn't known for shutting down early. GayMapper tip: For a first Manchester gay weekend where being right on Canal Street is the priority, Velvet is very difficult to beat.
5* Dakota Manchester

5* Dakota Manchester

Near Gay Nightlife, Luxury

A few streets beyond Piccadilly Station, Dakota Manchester feels noticeably more grown-up and indulgent than many of the hotels around the Gay Village while still leaving Canal Street within an easy walk. The dark, polished interiors continue into spacious rooms with rainfall showers, with larger rooms and suites available if you want to make more of the stay. The Grill is a destination restaurant in its own right and the stylish bar is ideal for starting the evening somewhere quieter before heading into the Village. It is slightly removed from the busiest nightlife, which can actually be an advantage when you finally want to sleep. GayMapper tip: Pick Dakota when you want easy access to the gay scene without necessarily wanting to live above it.
4* Malmaison Piccadilly

4* Malmaison Piccadilly

Near Gay Nightlife, Boutique

Just around the corner from Piccadilly Station, Malmaison Manchester Piccadilly has an excellent location for the Gay Village without feeling like a nightlife hotel. The converted former warehouse has the bold, slightly theatrical interiors associated with Malmaison, with stylish rooms and suites, a Chez Mal brasserie and bar, 24-hour room service and treatment rooms for massages and spa therapies. Canal Street is only a short walk away, while the Northern Quarter and city-centre shopping are equally easy to reach. It is a good middle ground if you want more personality and facilities than a budget hotel without stepping up to Manchester’s most expensive luxury options. GayMapper tip: Make sure you book the Piccadilly hotel rather than the newer Malmaison on Deansgate if proximity to the Gay Village is your priority.
2* New Union Hotel

2* New Union Hotel

Near Gay Nightlife, Great Value

If being right in the middle of Manchester’s gay scene matters more than getting an early night, New Union Hotel is hard to beat. It sits in the Gay Village beside Canal Street, with its own gay showbar downstairs hosting drag, karaoke and DJs. Rooms are simple rather than stylish, but come with en-suite showers, memory-foam mattresses, free WiFi and tea and coffee facilities. Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations are both within walking distance. The obvious trade-off is noise: this is a proper nightlife venue, especially at weekends, so it suits party trips much better than a peaceful city break. GayMapper tip: Come for the location and atmosphere rather than hotel luxuries – you really are staying in the middle of the action.
3* Pendulum Hotel

3* Pendulum Hotel

Near Gay Nightlife, Great Value

For a good-value room within easy reach of Canal Street, Pendulum Hotel remains a very practical choice. It is around five minutes on foot from Piccadilly Station and only a short stroll from the Gay Village, while Oxford Road and its bars, theatres and music venues are also nearby. The 117 rooms range from compact singles and city doubles to larger rooms and suites, with free WiFi throughout. There is a Garden Bar with indoor and outdoor seating plus a restaurant serving breakfast. This is more straightforward conference hotel than design destination, but the combination of price and location is difficult to fault. GayMapper tip: A good option when hotel prices shoot up for Pride, concerts or football weekends and you mainly need somewhere comfortable and central to sleep.
