It’s a straightforward, comfortable four-star rather than a destination hotel, but that works well if you expect to spend most of your time exploring Auckland rather than hanging around the lobby.

For a K Road-focused stay without a big hotel bill, Abstract has plenty going for it. The hotel sits at the top of Queen Street, just moments from Karangahape Road, so you can wander out to Auckland’s LGBTQ+ bars and nightlife without having to plan the journey home. One thing worth knowing before booking is that they don’t have conventional air-conditioning, so particularly warm summer nights may not suit everyone. This is particularly handy for a first visit, as you can explore much of the central city on foot and still have the gay nightlife close enough for an easy night out.

Grand Millennium suits travellers who like their hotel reassuringly full-service: bigger rooms, a proper swimming pool, somewhere to eat without going back outside, and enough facilities to make a rainy Auckland afternoon considerably less annoying. It sits beside the Aotea arts precinct, with the Civic, Town Hall and Queen Street close by. K Road is comfortably walkable, although it’s not quite a doorstep location — think easy evening stroll rather than stepping straight out into the bars. The heated indoor pool is one of the main reasons to choose it, particularly outside summer, and there’s also a sauna and gym. Current dining options include Katsura for Japanese food, Ember, Estelle’s wine and cocktail bar and The Aviary. Rooms are generous by city-centre standards, and the overall feel is more traditional five-star than hip boutique hotel.
