3* Motel One Alster

Hotel Motel One Hamburg-Alster, Steindamm, Hamburg, Germany

3* Motel One Alster

Near Gay Nightlife, Great Value

Motel One Hamburg-Alster is towards the quieter end of St Georg, giving you the advantage of the gay neighbourhood without putting you right beside the Hauptbahnhof bustle.

Lange Reihe and its LGBTQ+ cafés and bars are easily walkable, while Lohmühlenstraße U-Bahn station is practically outside for quick trips into the centre or across to St Pauli. The Alster is nearby too if the morning after calls for fresh air rather than another coffee.

Rooms follow Motel One’s familiar compact formula, but the large lounge and bar downstairs are pleasant enough that you don’t feel confined to them.

GayMapper tip: particularly good if you want the St Georg gay scene within walking distance but would rather sleep somewhere slightly calmer.

4* ARCOTEL Rubin

4* ARCOTEL Rubin

ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg gets one of the most useful locations on the list for a gay weekend. It sits on Steindamm in St Georg, with Lange Reihe, M&V, the cafés and other LGBTQ+ venues all within an easy walk. Hauptbahnhof is close enough to make airport arrivals painless, while the Alster, shopping streets and central sights are equally straightforward to reach. The area around Steindamm is lively and multicultural rather than polished, with excellent restaurants and food spots tucked between the hotels and shops. Back at the hotel there’s a sauna and fitness area, while the bar is handy if you want one final drink without extending the night any further. GayMapper tip: a strong all-rounder if you want the St Georg scene close by but prefer a full-service four-star hotel to a hostel or budget property.

4* Barcelo Hamburg

4* Barcelo Hamburg

Barceló Hamburg is particularly well placed if sightseeing and shopping matter more to you than staying right inside the gay neighbourhood. You’re close to the Binnenalster, Mönckebergstraße and Jungfernstieg, with the Rathaus and historic centre comfortably walkable. St Georg is still easy to reach — you can walk towards Lange Reihe for the gay bars or simply use the excellent transport around Hauptbahnhof and Jungfernstieg. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafés close to the hotel itself. The look is contemporary and fairly grown-up, making this a good middle ground between Hamburg’s inexpensive station hotels and the grand five-star properties around the Alster. GayMapper tip: a good couples’ choice if you want a smart central hotel and expect to divide your time between sightseeing, restaurants and nights out rather than basing the whole trip around the gay scene.

2* Pyjama Park Reeperbahn

2* Pyjama Park Reeperbahn

Pyjama Park Reeperbahn is very much for travellers who want Hamburg nightlife outside the front door. You’re right on the Reeperbahn, with WunderBar and the other LGBTQ+ venues around St Pauli within easy walking distance, as well as more bars, clubs and late-night food than anyone realistically needs. The hotel-hostel mix works well for friends and budget-conscious travellers, with private rooms rather than forcing you into dorm life. The building itself has plenty of St Pauli character too, with historic photographs reflecting different eras of the neighbourhood. Reeperbahn S-Bahn station is nearby, while the harbour and Landungsbrücken are easily walkable when daylight eventually returns. GayMapper tip: a great value choice if nights out are high on the agenda and you don’t expect the Reeperbahn to be particularly interested in an early bedtime.

3* Superbude Hostel St Pauli

3* Superbude Hostel St Pauli

Superbude Hamburg St. Pauli sits between the Schanzenviertel and the Reeperbahn, two of Hamburg’s best neighbourhoods if cafés, independent shops, street art and nights out feature heavily in your plans. The LGBTQ+ bars around St Pauli are about a ten-minute walk away, but you also have the much more local-feeling bars and restaurants of the Schanze immediately around you. Sternschanze station makes the rest of Hamburg easy to reach. Superbude deliberately sits somewhere between hotel and hostel: every room has its own bathroom, but the lobby, bar, games, events and communal spaces give it a much more sociable atmosphere than a conventional budget hotel. GayMapper tip: a fun choice for friends or solo travellers who want nightlife and neighbourhood atmosphere without actually sleeping on the Reeperbahn.

4* Reichshof Hotel Hamburg

4* Reichshof Hotel Hamburg

Reichshof Hotel Hamburg has one of those locations that makes a city break wonderfully uncomplicated. It’s opposite the Hauptbahnhof and just around the corner from Lange Reihe, so some of Hamburg’s best-known LGBTQ+ bars and cafés are only a few minutes away. The hotel itself has rather more personality than its station location might suggest. The grand 1910 building retains beautiful Art Deco details, particularly around the lobby and Bar 1910, where cocktails and live music make staying in for one drink surprisingly tempting. Shopping, the Kunsthalle and Alster are all close by, while the Hauptbahnhof gives you direct trains and U-Bahn services across the entire city. GayMapper tip: still our favourite Hamburg all-rounder — gay nightlife around the corner, superb transport and a hotel that actually feels like part of the city rather than just somewhere to sleep.

Tours & Experiences in Hamburg

Hamburg has a wonderfully grown-up sort of mischief about it. Cruise the harbour, explore the historic Speicherstadt, see the Elbphilharmonie, then wander through St Pauli and the Reeperbahn, where sightseeing and nightlife have a habit of blending into one another.
