This gay men’s resort sits across the Tagus near Costa da Caparica, so you stay here for pool days, the coast and easy access to the area’s famous gay beaches rather than city-centre sightseeing. The atmosphere is relaxed and sociable, with a pool, sauna, spa facilities and plenty of space to meet other guests. It’s adults only, and the international crowd gives the place much more of a holiday-resort feel than you’ll find at a city hotel in Bairro Alto. Central Lisbon requires a drive or taxi, so this works best when the beach is the main event rather than something you might squeeze in between museums. The dark, contemporary interiors suit the slightly grown-up feel, while rooms on the upper floors can give you lovely views across the red rooftops towards the castle and river. Baixa-Chiado metro is nearby, although you may find yourself walking almost everywhere from here. Bairro Alto gets lively late at night, but the hotel sits just far enough outside its busiest little streets to avoid feeling completely swallowed by the party. Le Consulat could hardly be better placed for an LGBTQ+ weekend in Lisbon. It overlooks Praça Luís de Camões, with Bairro Alto beginning almost outside and Chiado spreading downhill towards the river. The former Brazilian consulate has been turned into just 18 rooms, suites and apartments, so there’s more character and space than you’ll get at many central hotels. Portuguese art appears throughout, and some of the larger rooms include proper living areas and kitchens. Baixa-Chiado metro is moments away, while Cais do Sodré is easily walkable for the train to Cascais and the beaches west of Lisbon. The atmosphere is friendly rather than anonymous, and the pool and lounge make it especially easy for solo travellers to meet people without needing to manufacture conversation over breakfast. My Story Hotel Ouro gets the balance between old Lisbon and nightlife just about right. You’re in the flat streets of Baixa, close to the river and Rossio, but Chiado and Bairro Alto are only a short walk uphill when it’s time for dinner and drinks.
