Bright colours, pineapple motifs and a serious disregard for beige make Hotel Rose feel cheerfully at home in Portland. It sits directly opposite Tom McCall Waterfront Park, so riverside walks and Saturday Market mornings are almost too easy. Abigail Hall – once used by Portland suffragists – is now an elegant cocktail lounge, while Bullard Tavern brings together Texas influences and Pacific Northwest ingredients. Roseline Coffee occupies the lobby, and complimentary bikes plus a 24-hour fitness centre make exploring easy. You’re right in Downtown’s West End, close to Powell’s and within a comfortable walk of Old Town’s LGBTQ nightlife. The building itself combines the former Cornelius Hotel and Woodlark Building, giving all that polished design some genuine history underneath it. The Hoxton suits Old Town rather beautifully: a historic building, moody interiors, local art and enough going on downstairs that you could accidentally spend half the evening in the hotel. There are 119 rooms with walnut panelling, mid-century touches and locally curated artwork, ranging from compact “Shoebox” options to much roomier categories. Upstairs, Tope is the real crowd-pleaser – a rooftop taqueria serving tacos and cocktails with city views – while the ground-floor and basement spaces keep things lively later on. The Old Town location is particularly useful for LGBTQ visitors because Stag, Silverado, CC Slaughters and Darcelle XV are all clustered around this part of town. Powell’s, the Pearl and waterfront are also within easy reach. A former sailors’ hotel from 1881 is a wonderfully Portland place to sleep. It’s a good option whether you’re travelling hostel-style or simply like hotels with a little communal energy. Hotel deLuxe has decided that Old Hollywood never really needed to end. The whole place leans into Golden Age glamour with Art Deco styling, classic movie photography and just enough theatricality to make an ordinary hotel corridor feel ready for its close-up. Gracie’s serves brunch in appropriately elegant surroundings, while the tiny Driftwood Room is exactly the sort of dark, mid-century cocktail bar where a martini suddenly seems compulsory. Rooms come with robes, slippers, Bluetooth speakers and contemporary comforts, and there’s a 24-hour fitness centre downstairs. You’re just west of the Downtown core, close to Providence Park and an easy walk to the Pearl District, Powell’s and central restaurants. Gay nightlife is accessible without the hotel needing to pretend it sits in the middle of a dedicated gay district. Portland does hostels rather well, and Northwest Portland Hostel is considerably more appealing than the phrase “budget accommodation” might suggest. There’s a proper guest kitchen, courtyard and garden, laundry, bike storage and an excellent hostel café serving meals alongside local beer, wine and kombucha. Daily events such as walking tours, tastings, live music and trivia make this one of the easiest places on the list for solo travellers to actually meet people. Downtown and the Pearl District are walkable, with Washington Park and the Japanese Garden also well placed. Portland’s LGBTQ nightlife is scattered enough that you’ll probably dip into several neighbourhoods rather than stay glued to one strip.
