3* Beck's Motor Lodge

Beck's Motor Lodge, Market Street, San Francisco, CA, USA

3* Beck's Motor Lodge

There are few easier places to stay if the Castro is the main reason you’re coming to San Francisco. Beck’s Motor Lodge sits directly on Market Street in the neighbourhood itself, with the bars, cafés, restaurants and LGBTQ landmarks around Castro Street only a short stroll away.

This family-run motel has been part of the area since 1958, but the rooms are comfortably modern, with air conditioning, fridges and coffee makers. There’s also a large sun deck, guest laundry and – almost miraculous for San Francisco – complimentary on-site parking. The F-line streetcar stops nearby for journeys Downtown and towards the waterfront.

Dolores Park and the Mission are also easily reached, so this location works particularly well if you want to experience neighbourhood San Francisco rather than commute back every night from Union Square.

GayMapper tip: If you’re driving, free parking plus a Castro address makes Beck’s unusually good value by San Francisco standards.

Hotels you might like in San Francisco

3* Hampton Inn Downtown

3* Hampton Inn Downtown

Free breakfast can feel disproportionately exciting in an expensive city, and Hampton Inn San Francisco Downtown/Convention Center gives you that along with a very central base near Market Street, Powell Street and Moscone Center. Rooms are straightforward and contemporary, with free WiFi, streaming TVs and comfortable beds, while there’s also a proper fitness centre. The location makes Union Square, Yerba Buena Gardens and much of SoMa walkable, with BART and Muni nearby when San Francisco’s hills start testing your enthusiasm. For LGBTQ nightlife, you have options rather than one doorstep scene: the Castro is simple to reach by Muni, while the leather and fetish bars farther into SoMa are closer at hand. GayMapper tip: A practical choice when hotel prices are painful – included breakfast leaves a little more money for considerably more interesting San Francisco meals later in the day.

4* Hotel Zeppelin

4* Hotel Zeppelin

Hotel Zeppelin takes San Francisco’s counterculture history and turns the volume up. Rock-and-roll artwork, provocative graphics and a deliberately rebellious mood give Hotel Zeppelin far more attitude than the average Union Square boutique hotel. The basement game room is great fun, with arcade games and plenty of space to hang out, while the 24-hour gym even includes a boxing dummy. PLS on Post handles food and drinks, and pets get a particularly enthusiastic welcome rather than merely being tolerated. Union Square and the theatres are only a few blocks away, with excellent transport towards the Castro when it’s time for the main gay nightlife. Chinatown and Nob Hill are easy to reach too. GayMapper tip: A much better fit for travellers who find beige hotel lobbies depressing – the whole place is designed to remind you that San Francisco once had a seriously rebellious streak.
4* Hotel Zephyr

4* Hotel Zephyr

Shipping containers, giant games and fire pits aren't the usual Fisherman’s Wharf formula. Hotel Zephyr takes the waterfront setting and has considerably more fun with it, filling the hotel with recycled nautical materials and playful industrial design. The 361 rooms have a shipyard-inspired look, with some adding balconies or direct Bay views. The real star is The Yard, an 8,000-square-foot outdoor space packed with oversized games, sculptures and four fire pits; there’s also an indoor games room with pool, ping-pong and shuffleboard. A daily amenity fee applies, so factor that into the rate. Pier 39 is virtually outside, while the Castro and SoMa LGBTQ nightlife are journeys for later rather than neighbourhood attractions. GayMapper tip: Zephyr works particularly well with friends – fire pits, games and waterfront wandering give you plenty to do before you’ve even started sightseeing.
4* YOTEL San Francisco

4* YOTEL San Francisco

YOTEL’s futuristic rooms are squeezed inside the historic Grant Building, which is a very San Francisco collision of old architecture and new technology. YOTEL San Francisco sits directly on Market Street with Civic Center, theatres and Downtown transport close by. The smallest cabins are genuinely tiny – the Solo is only around nine square metres – but smart design makes good use of the space, while larger rooms and suites give you much more room to breathe. There’s a sizeable 24-hour gym, co-working areas and self-service technology throughout. The restored building is also LEED Silver certified. This Mid-Market position gives you easy transport towards the Castro and puts SoMa’s queer nightlife within relatively easy reach without forcing you to stay in either district. GayMapper tip: Check the room size before booking rather than afterwards – the compact cabins are clever, but “compact” is doing some serious work here.
3* The Hotel Castro

3* The Hotel Castro

If being right in the middle of San Francisco’s gay neighbourhood is the priority, The Hotel Castro is difficult to beat. This tiny 12-room boutique hotel sits directly in the Castro, with many of the neighbourhood’s best-known LGBTQ+ bars, cafés, shops and venues just a few minutes’ walk away. The hotel embraces its surroundings too: each room takes inspiration from LGBTQ+ figures, giving the place considerably more personality than a typical city hotel. Rooms are compact but smartly designed, with floor-to-ceiling windows and their own furnished outdoor terrace. There’s also a rooftop terrace, The Nest, while the Lobby Bar downstairs is handy for a drink before heading out. The experience is deliberately independent, with keyless check-in and most guest services handled digitally rather than through a traditional reception. GayMapper tip: Choose this for the location rather than lots of hotel facilities. You’re staying right inside the Castro, so San Francisco’s LGBTQ+ scene effectively becomes your doorstep.
