In December 2026, InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco celebrated its 100th birthday, and there’s still something wonderfully old-school about arriving at the top of Nob Hill with cable cars rattling past the entrance. The big event is upstairs. Top of the Mark has occupied the 19th floor since 1939, with 360-degree views across the city, Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. For the centenary it has even revived its famous 100 Martini experience. Elsewhere there’s the Nob Hill Club restaurant and a 24-hour fitness centre, while rooms keep a more traditional luxury feel. Union Square and Chinatown are close downhill; the Castro requires Muni or a short ride, but that’s a fair exchange for one of San Francisco’s landmark addresses. GayMapper tip: Have at least one drink at Top of the Mark around sunset – the view is the reason this hotel still feels special after a century.

If your hotel fantasy involves chandeliers and a glass-domed swimming pool, Palace Hotel, a Luxury Collection Hotel, San Francisco is happy to oblige. This grand Market Street landmark has been part of the city since the 19th century and still knows how to make an entrance. The Garden Court is the showstopper, filled with light beneath its enormous glass dome and crystal chandeliers, while the Pied Piper bar contains Maxfield Parrish’s famous namesake painting. Upstairs, the indoor pool sits beneath another glass roof, joined by a 24-hour fitness centre. Rooms continue the traditional-luxury mood with high ceilings and marble bathrooms. Montgomery Street BART and Muni are outside, making the Castro simple to reach while Chinatown, Union Square and the Embarcadero are much closer. GayMapper tip: Even if you skip afternoon tea, go and look at the Garden Court – subtle it absolutely is not.

There’s a pleasantly old-fashioned San Francisco feel to Kensington Park Hotel, housed in a 1925 Gothic-style building just off Union Square. Hand-painted ceilings and dark wood in the lobby set the tone before you even reach the classic, comfortably furnished bedrooms. One especially welcome feature is what you don’t get: there’s currently no amenity or resort fee. WiFi is complimentary, the rooms are relatively spacious for central San Francisco and cable cars pass close by for the wonderfully impractical-but-fun journey towards Fisherman’s Wharf. Dining can be charged back from nearby partner restaurants. The Castro isn’t around the corner, but Powell Street transport makes reaching the main gay nightlife straightforward, while Chinatown, theatres and Downtown attractions are much closer. GayMapper tip: A good pick if you like proper historic hotels but would rather spend your money on dinner than another mysterious daily “destination fee.”

Sleeping opposite Golden Gate Park gives you a completely different San Francisco from Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf. Stanyan Park Hotel occupies a historic Victorian building on the edge of Haight-Ashbury, making the park, colourful Haight Street and neighbourhood cafés part of everyday life. Its 36 rooms and suites retain traditional Victorian styling, with the larger suites adding kitchens. An expanded continental breakfast is included, along with evening tea and a weekday wine-and-cheese reception – pleasingly civilised touches for a three-star hotel. The Castro lies south-east rather than outside the door, but is easily reachable by local transport, while this location is far better for Golden Gate Park, the de Young, botanical gardens and exploring the western side of the city. GayMapper tip: Choose Stanyan Park if you want leafy, bohemian San Francisco first and gay nightlife second – especially if Golden Gate Park is high on your list.

A chandelier made from more than a thousand recycled spectacles gives you a fair idea of what Hotel Zetta is going for. The SoMa hotel mixes art, technology and slightly eccentric design without taking itself too seriously. Rooms are unusually spacious for San Francisco, while the social spaces include games and plenty of quirky artwork. The Cavalier next door is a handsome London-inspired brasserie, and hidden-away Marianne’s adds a rock-and-roll speakeasy feel for drinks later on. Market Street, Union Square, Yerba Buena Gardens and the museums of SoMa are all close. LGBTQ travellers are also well placed for the more leather- and fetish-oriented queer nightlife deeper in SoMa, while the Castro is an easy Muni journey away. GayMapper tip: Look for Marianne’s rather than stopping at the obvious lobby bar – the hidden speakeasy is much more fun.

You don't come here for street-level views. Four Seasons Hotel San Francisco at Embarcadero occupies the top 11 floors of a 48-storey tower, so even breakfast can come with the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge and city spread out below you. The rooms are elegant and understated, with sky-high windows doing most of the decorating. Orafo now serves California-influenced Italian food downstairs, while a 2026 addition, Weather Permitting, has brought a seasonal pop-up bar to the 40th-floor terrace. There’s also a 24-hour fitness centre and an extensive programme of in-room wellness options. The Financial District puts Chinatown, the Ferry Building and Embarcadero close by. For LGBTQ nightlife you’ll travel towards the Castro or SoMa, but the reward here is that extraordinary elevated setting.
