4* Backstage Hotel Stockholm

Djurgårdsvägen 68, 115 21 Stockholm, Sweden

4* Backstage Hotel Stockholm

Music, theatre and museums rather than shopping streets define the setting at Backstage Hotel Stockholm. Formerly Pop House Hotel, it sits on Djurgården beside ABBA The Museum and close to Gröna Lund, Cirkus and many of Stockholm’s biggest cultural attractions.

Rooms have plenty of personality, ranging from stylish doubles and loft rooms to generous suites with terraces. ABBA fans can go one step further with the ABBA Gold Junior Suite, designed in collaboration with the museum. Downstairs there’s a relaxed brasserie, bar and café, making this an easy place to linger after a day exploring Djurgården.

You’re away from Stockholm’s main LGBTQ+ nightlife in Gamla Stan and Södermalm, but trams, ferries and buses make getting back into the centre straightforward.

GayMapper tip: A particularly fun choice if ABBA, museums or Djurgården are high on your Stockholm list — the location feels quite different from staying in the busy city centre.

Hotels you might like in Stockholm

4* Hotel Rival

4* Hotel Rival

Hotel Rival gives you one of the best combinations of neighbourhood atmosphere and LGBTQ+ location in Stockholm. It overlooks leafy Mariatorget in Södermalm, with Side Track and other queer-friendly bars and venues within an easy walk, while Gamla Stan is about ten minutes away on foot. There’s plenty going on inside too. This independent 99-room boutique hotel combines Art Deco touches with contemporary Swedish design, and its 735-seat theatre still hosts concerts, comedy and live shows. Rooms come with Egyptian cotton bedding, pillow menus and thoughtful technology, while breakfast is included and stretches until midday at weekends. Watson’s Bar, the Tavern and the atmospheric cocktail bar give you several options before heading out for the evening. GayMapper tip: One of the strongest choices for LGBTQ+ visitors who want to actually stay in Södermalm rather than commute over from the central station area.
4* Nordic Light

4* Nordic Light

Few Stockholm hotels make arriving from the airport this painless. Nordic Light Hotel is just around the corner from Central Station and roughly 100 metres from the Arlanda Express, making it particularly handy for a short city break or an early departure. Inside, the focus is contemporary Nordic design: clean lines, carefully chosen materials and comfortable Swedish-made beds rather than generic chain-hotel styling. Rooms include coffee and tea facilities, Chromecast and well-designed bathrooms, while there’s also a fully equipped gym. Lykke restaurant serves Nordic-inspired food and has a terrace when Stockholm weather cooperates. The Norrmalm location puts shopping and major sights close at hand. Stockholm’s LGBTQ+ nightlife is more scattered, principally around Gamla Stan and Södermalm, but both are easily reached from here on foot or by metro. GayMapper tip: Especially convenient if you’re flying through Arlanda — you can be off the airport train and at reception within a couple of minutes.

3* Langholmen Hotell

3* Langholmen Hotell

Spending the night in prison sounds considerably more appealing at Långholmen Hotell. This former 19th-century jail has been transformed into an unusual hotel where the old cells are now compact guest rooms, complete with private shower rooms, Wi-Fi and plenty of original prison character. The island setting is another reason to stay. Långholmen is green and peaceful, with walking trails and a small bathing beach right outside the hotel — a lovely bonus during Stockholm’s warmer months. There’s also a restaurant serving Swedish food, a bar and the fascinating prison museum. Hornstull’s restaurants, bars and metro station are around ten minutes away on foot. Stockholm’s main LGBTQ+ venues are further east across Södermalm and in Gamla Stan, but easy to reach by public transport. GayMapper tip: Probably Stockholm’s most memorable hotel experience — especially appealing in summer when you can combine the former-prison setting with the island’s parkland and swimming beach.
5* Grand Hotel

5* Grand Hotel

For classic Stockholm glamour, it’s difficult to look beyond Grand Hôtel Stockholm. The hotel has occupied its prime waterfront position since 1874, facing the Royal Palace and Gamla Stan across the harbour, and remains one of the city’s landmark luxury addresses. Rooms and suites range from elegant courtyard-facing options to spectacular accommodation overlooking the water. Downstairs, The Veranda is famous for its traditional Swedish smörgåsbord, Mathias Dahlgren oversees acclaimed dining, and the Cadier Bar remains a polished place for cocktails. The substantial Grand Hôtel Spa & Fitness has a swimming pool, hot and cold plunge pools, saunas, treatment rooms and a waterfront gym. Gamla Stan’s gay-friendly venues are just across the bridge, with Södermalm and the rest of Stockholm’s LGBTQ+ nightlife easily reached beyond. GayMapper tip: If you’re splashing out, a waterfront room makes the most of this address — waking up opposite the Royal Palace is very much part of the experience.
4* Radisson Blu Waterfront

4* Radisson Blu Waterfront

Step out of Stockholm Central Station and you’re practically there. Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel, Stockholm sits beside the railway station and Waterfront Congress Centre, making it one of the easiest bases in the city for transport while still putting Gamla Stan, City Hall and the main shopping streets within walking distance. Rooms have a clean contemporary look, with the higher categories offering impressive views across the water and city skyline. There’s a modern 24-hour fitness centre, while The Lounge Bar & Restaurant covers everything from breakfast through to evening drinks and dinner. The property now also operates as a Verified Net Zero Hotel, with renewable energy and lower-carbon operations forming a bigger part of its identity. Gay nightlife isn’t concentrated immediately around the hotel, but Gamla Stan and Södermalm are straightforward to reach. GayMapper tip: Particularly practical for a weekend break — the airport train, intercity trains and metro are all right beside you.
