Rooms are modern and comfortable, with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, work desks and contemporary bathrooms. There’s also a fitness centre and the Lone Star restaurant and bar downstairs, while some higher-floor rooms offer city views. From here, you can wander downhill along Queen Street towards Aotea Square, the Civic and the main shopping area, with the waterfront farther on. It’s a straightforward, comfortable four-star rather than a destination hotel, but that works well if you expect to spend most of your time exploring Auckland rather than hanging around the lobby.

Kiwi International Hotel is a good option if you want to keep accommodation costs down without ending up miles away from central Auckland. Free Wi-Fi and a central location cover the important basics. Aotea Square, the Civic and the main Queen Street shopping area are all downhill from the hotel, so much of central Auckland is also walkable. Cordis works particularly well if you want easy access to K Road without giving up the comforts of a full-service five-star hotel. It sits on Symonds Street, just a few minutes’ walk from Karangahape Road, so getting to and from Auckland’s main gay nightlife is pleasantly straightforward. The hotel itself has considerably more facilities than most central Auckland stays. There’s an outdoor heated swimming pool, large health club, sauna, steam facilities and the excellent Chuan Spa, plus several restaurants and bars including the popular Eight international buffet restaurant. Rooms are spacious and polished, with especially comfortable beds and contemporary bathrooms, while the newer Pinnacle Tower offers some impressive city views. Auckland Domain, the university district and the CBD are all within easy reach too. Auckland City Hotel is a useful option if you want to keep accommodation costs sensible without moving out of the centre. It occupies an attractive historic building on Hobson Street, only a few minutes from the Sky Tower, Aotea Square and Queen Street. Rooms range from straightforward doubles and twins to studios with kitchenettes and larger multi-bedroom suites, making it particularly handy for longer stays or trips with friends. Free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and modern bathrooms come as standard, while there’s also a restaurant and café, guest laundry facilities and limited on-site parking. K Road is around a 12-minute walk away. That’s certainly manageable if you fancy walking up for the evening, although it isn’t quite close enough for us to describe the hotel as being right by the gay nightlife. For the price, though, the central location and choice of room types make this a very practical base for exploring Auckland. GayMapper tip: worth considering if you’d rather spend a little less on the room and keep more of the budget for eating, drinking and exploring the city.

The hotel also offers more facilities than you might expect at this price point, including a restaurant and bar, co-working areas, gym, spa, sauna and steam room. Aotea Square and central Queen Street are easily reached on foot, while the rest of the CBD stretches downhill towards the waterfront. GayMapper tip: a great option if nightlife location matters more than having a huge room. Being this close to K Road makes heading home after a late night refreshingly simple.
