The rest of the hotel has caught up nicely after a comprehensive renovation, with redesigned rooms and refreshed public spaces. Downstairs, the new Skipjack Oyster has replaced Stella San Jac, focusing on seafood and oysters, while there’s also a 24-hour fitness studio. Location is another strong point. You’re just off Sixth Street and within a comfortable walk of the LGBTQ+ bars on West 4th, so there’s little need for taxis on a night out. Park Lane is about as far from the standard downtown hotel experience as you can get while still being close to central Austin. Tucked into leafy Travis Heights near South Congress, this tiny eco-focused guest house offers private cottages surrounded by gardens rather than corridors and elevators. Expect plenty of character: hardwood floors, stained glass, kitchenettes and private outdoor spaces, with solar power and other environmental touches built into the property. There’s also a secluded outdoor swimming pool, gardens and an outdoor shower. Breakfast is a genuine part of the experience, with organic vegetarian food and vegan options, much of it using local or garden-grown ingredients. South Congress is a short walk away; the gay nightlife downtown is not, so expect to use a rideshare in the evening. Omni is a good all-round downtown option, especially following its recent renovation. The rooms and public areas have been refreshed with a smarter mid-century-inspired look, while the location puts Sixth Street, the Capitol and Austin’s main downtown attractions within easy reach. Up on the roof, there’s a heated outdoor pool with downtown views, cabanas and seasonal Cloud Bar — a welcome escape when Texas turns up the temperature. Downstairs, Capital A is the main restaurant, with President’s House Coffee covering caffeine and quick breakfasts. There’s also a newly renovated 24-hour fitness centre. West 4th Street’s gay bars are around a ten-minute walk away, so it’s close enough to qualify as genuinely useful for nightlife without being surrounded by clubs when you’re trying to sleep. Hidden behind greenery on busy South Congress, Hotel San José feels almost secret once you step inside. The former 1930s motor court has just 40 bungalow-style rooms set around leafy courtyards, creating a laid-back little retreat in one of Austin’s best neighbourhoods. The design is deliberately simple and stylish rather than lavish, while the small outdoor pool provides a peaceful place to cool down between exploring. The Courtyard Lounge is popular with locals as well as guests, serving cocktails and light food among the gardens, with music, DJs and other events appearing regularly. Step outside and SoCo’s restaurants, boutiques and music venues are immediately around you. Downtown’s LGBTQ+ nightlife requires a rideshare, but that’s the trade-off for staying somewhere with considerably more neighbourhood personality. Hotel Van Zandt taps into Austin’s live-music culture more convincingly than most large downtown hotels. Set in the Rainey Street district, it has regular performances, bold interiors and a lively atmosphere that feels very much part of the city rather than just another international hotel. The fourth-floor rooftop pool is a major attraction, with loungers, cabanas and city views. Geraldine’s combines dinner and cocktails with regular live music, while Brass Poppy downstairs is a moodier spot for late drinks. Café 605 takes care of coffee and lighter daytime options. Rooms are stylish without being overly formal, and higher categories offer views across the city, lake or pool. Rainey Street nightlife is right outside, while the gay bars around West 4th are easiest reached by a short rideshare. Hyatt Regency offers a noticeably calmer base than the hotels in the middle of downtown. It sits directly beside Lady Bird Lake, with walking and cycling trails outside and impressive skyline views across the water. The refreshed pool deck has cabanas overlooking downtown, while Ripple & Roots serves Texas-inspired food beside the lake. Downtown is just across the river, and West 4th Street’s gay bars are around a 15–20 minute walk away. A rideshare is the easier option if you’re heading out late.
