3* The Empress Hotel

Empress Hotel La Jolla, Fay Avenue, La Jolla, CA, USA

3* The Empress Hotel

La Jolla makes a convincing argument for spending at least part of a San Diego trip away from Downtown altogether. The Empress Hotel sits right in the village, with restaurants, galleries, coastal walks and La Jolla Cove all within an easy stroll.

Rooms have recently been refreshed, with fridges, coffee facilities and larger suites available when you want more space. A daily hot breakfast is included in the destination fee, along with afternoon refreshments and fitness-centre access, while the hotel’s Beach Concierge can sort you out with chairs and umbrellas for the coast. Manhattan of La Jolla downstairs covers Italian dinners when you don’t feel like going far.

San Diego’s gay nightlife in Hillcrest is across town, so this is very much the beach-and-La-Jolla choice.

GayMapper tip: Come here for mornings by the water and seals at the Cove – save Hillcrest for one planned night out rather than trying to commute back and forth.

4* Catamaran Resort and Spa

4* Catamaran Resort and Spa

Palm trees, koi ponds, waterfalls, tropical birds and tiki torches: Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa has absolutely no intention of being subtle. The Polynesian theme may be gloriously old-school, but the setting between Mission Bay and the Pacific is hard to beat. Days can involve paddleboarding, cycling the boardwalk, lounging beside the outdoor pool or disappearing into the beachfront spa, whose hot tub looks directly over the bay. Oceana Coastal Kitchen keeps dinner waterside, while many rooms and suites add balconies looking towards Mission Bay, the ocean or tropical gardens. Pacific Beach gives you plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, although San Diego’s main LGBTQ nightlife in Hillcrest is a separate evening out. GayMapper tip: This is one to book when you actually want to use the resort – otherwise you’re wasting a perfectly good excuse to spend a day doing very little beside Mission Bay.
4* Coronado Island Resort & Spa

4* Coronado Island Resort & Spa

The view back across San Diego Bay is the headline here. Coronado Island Marriott Resort & Spa spreads across 16 waterfront acres, with the Downtown skyline and Coronado Bridge providing the backdrop from rooms, restaurants and the grounds. There are three outdoor pools, tennis and pickleball, a full-service spa and large wellness centre, while the accommodation ranges from spacious rooms and suites to cottages with kitchenettes and separate living areas. Bikes make it easy to explore Coronado, and the ferry is a much nicer way to reach Downtown than sitting in traffic on the bridge. This is resort-style San Diego rather than a gay-nightlife base; Hillcrest is across the bay and inland. But for a quieter waterfront stay, the location has plenty going for it. GayMapper tip: Consider a cottage for a longer visit – extra space plus a kitchenette makes the relaxed Coronado pace even easier to settle into.
3* Porto Vista Hotel

3* Porto Vista Hotel

Little Italy is one of those neighbourhoods where your biggest problem is deciding where to eat next, and Porto Vista Hotel puts you right in the middle of it. The waterfront, Saturday market, cafés and restaurants are all easy to reach on foot, with Downtown just beyond. The hotel has embraced its slightly retro motel bones rather than trying to hide them. Rooms open from exterior corridors and feature original artwork, while murals and installations continue around the building. Upstairs, GlassDoor serves Mexican food and cocktails with sweeping harbour and skyline views – definitely the hotel's strongest card. Hillcrest and its gay bars are a short rideshare away, so Porto Vista works better as a food-and-city base than a nightlife-first hotel. GayMapper tip: Head upstairs around sunset – those GlassDoor views make the hotel feel considerably more expensive than the room rate often suggests.
5* Pendry San Diego

5* Pendry San Diego

Pendry San Diego manages the difficult trick of being a serious luxury hotel while also feeling like somewhere you could actually have fun. Its Gaslamp location helps, but so does having restaurants, bars, a rooftop pool and a beer hall all under one roof. The 317 rooms bring a polished coastal-California look, while Lionfish covers seafood and sushi, Provisional does brunch, Fifth & Rose handles cocktails and Nason’s Beer Hall brings the volume up when required. The Pool House sits beside the rooftop pool for daytime drinks, and Spa Pendry gives you somewhere to undo the consequences of the night before. Hillcrest’s gay bars are a quick rideshare away, while the Gaslamp and Petco Park are outside the door. GayMapper tip: Pendry works particularly well when different people in the group want different things – spa, rooftop, cocktails, beer and proper dinner can all happen without leaving the building.
4* Indigo Gaslamp Quarter

4* Indigo Gaslamp Quarter

Hotel Indigo San Diego-Gaslamp Quarter has changed quite a bit since the old GayMapper description – and for the better. The East Village location still puts Petco Park practically outside, but the current food and drink setup now includes Table 509 Bar & Kitchen and Borrego, a desert-inspired rooftop bar with skyline views. Rooms keep the colourful boutique feel, and the hotel remains pet-friendly with a fitness centre and plenty of Downtown energy around it. The Gaslamp’s restaurants and bars are easily walkable, as are the convention centre and waterfront. Hillcrest is a quick rideshare north, so this works particularly well when you want San Diego’s Downtown attractions by day but still plan to dip into the LGBTQ nightlife rather than live directly inside it. GayMapper tip: Borrego at sunset followed by Hillcrest later on makes for a very easy two-neighbourhood evening.
3* Uptown Inn by Vantaggio

3* Uptown Inn by Vantaggio

Sometimes location really is the whole story. Uptown Inn by Vantaggio Suites sits directly on University Avenue in Hillcrest, placing some of San Diego’s best-known LGBTQ venues within minutes: Rich’s for dancing, Flicks for drinks and videos, Gossip Grill and plenty more. The recently renovated studios are compact but smart, with fridges, work space and free WiFi. Longer stays are made easier by a shared full kitchen and guest laundry, while there’s also a 24-hour fitness centre and paid secure parking. It feels more like a simple urban aparthotel than a conventional full-service property – which suits the neighbourhood nicely. Balboa Park and the Zoo are nearby too, so staying here doesn’t mean choosing nightlife over sightseeing. GayMapper tip: If the gay scene is your main reason for staying in San Diego, this is the rare hotel where you can genuinely forget about rideshares for the evening.
