The views are the first thing you notice at Embarc Vancouver. Its 29 studios and suites occupy the upper floors of the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking over the city and, from many rooms, towards the mountains. Accommodation feels more residential than hotel-like. Studios have partial kitchen facilities, while the one-bedroom suites add separate living and dining areas and can sleep up to four. Guests also have access to an indoor lap pool, hot tubs and fitness centre within the complex. From this central position, Robson Street and Downtown shopping are close, while Davie Village and Vancouver’s main concentration of LGBTQ+ bars are roughly ten minutes away on foot. Sunset Beach is a little further beyond. Vancouver’s oldest hotel has been looking particularly smart following an extensive restoration. Built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush era, the Victorian Hotel mixes original exposed brick, high ceilings and hardwood floors with much more contemporary bedrooms and bathrooms. There are only 42 rooms, ranging from compact doubles to larger king and twin options. Newer rooms in the Sterling Wing offer a particularly polished boutique feel, while the original building retains more of the historic character. Downstairs you’ll now find Italian restaurant Locanda dell’Orso, alongside a café, bookshop and other small independent businesses. Gastown is just a few blocks away and Waterfront Station is convenient for transport. Davie Village and Vancouver’s main LGBTQ+ nightlife sit across Downtown rather than immediately nearby, but are easy to reach by bus or taxi. Harbour and mountain views are very much part of the experience at Fairmont Pacific Rim. Sitting beside Canada Place on Vancouver’s waterfront, this contemporary five-star hotel combines serious luxury with a noticeably more modern, creative personality than a traditional grand hotel. The rooftop pool terrace is a highlight in warmer weather, while the substantial Fairmont Spa and fitness centre make staying in equally tempting. Botanist is the flagship restaurant, and the Lobby Lounge & RawBar has developed into one of Vancouver’s better-known spots for cocktails, sushi and live music. Art installations and rotating exhibitions appear throughout the building. Stanley Park, Gastown and the seawall are all particularly accessible from here. Davie Village’s main LGBTQ+ nightlife is across Downtown, so allow around ten minutes by taxi or rideshare. Small-scale luxury is the appeal at L'Hermitage Hotel Vancouver. Rather than feeling like a huge international hotel, it combines polished service with residential-style rooms and suites in a very central position at Robson and Richards. The heated outdoor saltwater lap pool and hot tub are open year-round, with a garden terrace providing somewhere surprisingly peaceful above the Downtown streets. There’s also a 24-hour gym, while the larger suites include fireplaces and extra living space. Italian marble bathrooms and bathrobes add a suitably upscale touch across the rooms. Vancouver City Centre SkyTrain is only a few minutes away, with the art gallery, shops and Yaletown easily reached on foot. The main LGBTQ+ bars of Davie Village lie around a 15-minute walk towards the West End. Independent, family-owned and with only 83 rooms and suites, Wedgewood Hotel & Spa offers a much more intimate version of five-star Vancouver. It has been part of Relais & Châteaux for years, and its recently refurbished accommodation combines elegant furnishings with private balconies on many room categories. Bacchus Restaurant & Lounge is an atmospheric spot for dinner, cocktails or afternoon tea, while the spa includes treatment rooms, couples suites, a relaxation lounge and eucalyptus steam room. There’s also a fitness centre. The position opposite Robson Square puts shopping, the Vancouver Art Gallery and central Downtown right outside. Davie Village and the city’s principal LGBTQ+ nightlife are around a 10–15 minute walk away, while the waterfront is easily reached in the other direction. A 1950s motor inn turned playful boutique hotel, The Burrard has considerably more personality than its modest star rating suggests. Rooms face either the street or a palm-filled central courtyard complete with seating, fire pit and ping-pong, while complimentary bikes and e-bikes are a great way to explore the seawall and Stanley Park. Its location on Burrard Street is particularly useful for LGBTQ+ visitors. Head west and you’re quickly into Davie Village, Vancouver’s main gay neighbourhood, with bars including 1181, Junction and Numbers all comfortably walkable. Sunset Beach is also around ten minutes away in the same direction. Rooms include Nespresso machines, fridges, air-conditioning and casting-enabled TVs, and the hotel is locally owned and independent.
