5* Cordis, Auckland

83 Symonds Street, Grafton, Auckland 1010, New Zealand

5* Cordis, Auckland

Sometimes the luxury option also happens to have one of the best locations for a gay weekend. Cordis sits just off Karangahape Road on Symonds Street, with K Road practically around the corner — close enough to head out for drinks on foot, while still coming home to a proper five-star hotel.

With 642 rooms and suites, this is a substantial hotel, split between the original building and the newer Pinnacle Tower. Higher categories in the tower offer excellent city views, while Club rooms and suites include access to the Club Lounge on level 14.

If you fancy spending part of the day doing very little, there’s a heated outdoor pool and spa pool, Chuan Spa, sauna, steam facilities and a 24-hour gym.

Food-wise, Eight is the hotel’s large international buffet restaurant, while Chandelier Lounge and Our Land offer more relaxed options for drinks and lighter meals.

GayMapper tip: particularly appealing if one half of your Auckland break involves K Road and the other involves a robe, spa treatment and a very long breakfast.

Hotels you might like in Auckland

5* QT Auckland

5* QT Auckland

QT Auckland is a great choice if waterfront restaurants and stylish surroundings appeal more than having the gay nightlife immediately outside. The hotel sits beside Viaduct Harbour, putting some of Auckland’s best dining, bars and harbour walks right on the doorstep, with Britomart and the ferry terminal also within easy walking distance. As you’d expect from QT, the interiors are bold and playful rather than traditionally luxurious. Rooms come with Nespresso machines, Bose speakers, Chromecast, free Wi-Fi and Dyson hairdryers, while many look towards the harbour or city. The Mediterranean-inspired Esther restaurant is well worth trying, but the star attraction is Rooftop at QT, where cocktails come with views across the Viaduct and skyline. There’s also a fitness centre, 24-hour room service and valet parking. K Road isn’t close enough to wander back from casually after a night out, so plan on a short rideshare if you’re heading to the gay bars. GayMapper tip: particularly good if your ideal Auckland stay is waterfront by day and K Road when the mood takes you.
4* Abstract Hotel

4* Abstract Hotel

For a K Road-focused stay without a big hotel bill, Abstract has plenty going for it. The hotel sits at the top of Queen Street, just moments from Karangahape Road, so you can wander out to Auckland’s LGBTQ+ bars and nightlife without having to plan the journey home. The rooms are intentionally compact, but they make clever use of the space and include private bathrooms and kitchenettes. One thing worth knowing before booking is that they don’t have conventional air-conditioning, so particularly warm summer nights may not suit everyone. There’s considerably more happening outside the room: an Italian restaurant, terrace bar, library lounge, gym and Sa-Ni Spa, where facilities include treatment rooms, a sauna and jacuzzi. Spa treatments and facilities aren’t simply part of the standard room rate, so factor that in if you’re booking for the wellness side. GayMapper tip: a particularly good fit for solo travellers or couples who’d rather have K Road almost outside than pay extra for a huge bedroom.
4* Auckland City Hotel

4* Auckland City Hotel

Auckland City Hotel is a useful option if you want to keep accommodation costs sensible without moving out of the centre. It occupies an attractive historic building on Hobson Street, only a few minutes from the Sky Tower, Aotea Square and Queen Street. Rooms range from straightforward doubles and twins to studios with kitchenettes and larger multi-bedroom suites, making it particularly handy for longer stays or trips with friends. Free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and modern bathrooms come as standard, while there’s also a restaurant and café, guest laundry facilities and limited on-site parking. K Road is around a 12-minute walk away. That’s certainly manageable if you fancy walking up for the evening, although it isn’t quite close enough for us to describe the hotel as being right by the gay nightlife. For the price, though, the central location and choice of room types make this a very practical base for exploring Auckland. GayMapper tip: worth considering if you’d rather spend a little less on the room and keep more of the budget for eating, drinking and exploring the city.
2* Kiwi International Hotel

2* Kiwi International Hotel

Kiwi International Hotel is a good option if you want to keep accommodation costs down without ending up miles away from central Auckland. It sits at the upper end of Queen Street, only a short walk from Karangahape Road, so K Road’s LGBTQ+ bars and nightlife are genuinely easy to reach on foot. Accommodation is simple and no-frills, with a useful choice depending on how tightly you’re watching the budget. Standard rooms come with private bathrooms, TV, mini fridge and tea and coffee facilities, while cheaper Economy rooms use shared bathroom facilities. Free Wi-Fi and a central location cover the important basics. Aotea Square, the Civic and the main Queen Street shopping area are all downhill from the hotel, so much of central Auckland is also walkable. GayMapper tip: don’t come expecting boutique styling or a rooftop pool, but if you want a straightforward room close to K Road at one of the more approachable prices in central Auckland, Kiwi International does the job nicely.
5* Hotel DeBrett

5* Hotel DeBrett

Hotel DeBrett is the antidote to the big international five-star: just 25 individually designed rooms, plenty of colour and personality, and a tucked-away High Street location that feels surprisingly peaceful for somewhere right in the CBD. The décor mixes contemporary New Zealand art with mid-century furniture and Art Deco touches, while the bathrooms are unusually indulgent, with deep baths, walk-in showers and underfloor heating in many room categories. It’s a lovely place to come back to after a day exploring the city rather than simply somewhere functional to sleep. Downstairs, Vivace Restaurant & Bar at DeBretts serves New Zealand and European-inspired food, while Housebar remains the hotel’s atmospheric cocktail hideaway. Britomart, Queen Street and the waterfront are all close. K Road is farther away, so a short rideshare is the easier option when you’re heading out to the gay bars. GayMapper tip: choose DeBrett if you’d rather have 25 distinctive rooms and a great cocktail bar than 300 identical bedrooms and a cavernous lobby.
