3* Aloft Austin Downtown

Aloft Austin Downtown, East 7th Street, Austin, TX, USA

3* Aloft Austin Downtown

Aloft is one of the easiest places to recommend for a relaxed downtown stay. It puts you close to the action without feeling overly formal or expensive, and West 4th Street’s gay bars are only a short walk away.

Rooms are modern and unfussy, many with good downtown views, while the hotel shares several lively food and drink spaces with neighbouring Element. Caroline is the all-day restaurant downstairs, Coffeehouse at Caroline handles the morning caffeine, and Upstairs at Caroline is the fun part — an open-air rooftop with cocktails, skyline views, shuffleboard, foosball and other games.

Sixth Street and the Capitol are also easily reached on foot, so you can cover a lot of Austin without needing a car.

GayMapper tip: particularly well suited to friends travelling together — sociable, central and close to the gay scene without being a full-on party hotel.

Hotels you might like in Austin

3* Austin Motel

3* Austin Motel

Few hotels look more naturally at home in Austin than the Austin Motel. This colourful 1938 motor court sits right on South Congress and has retained plenty of its retro character without feeling like you’ve actually been asked to sleep in 1938. Its 41 rooms range from cosy doubles to larger poolside rooms and suites, with playful interiors, minibars, robes and free Wi-Fi. Outside, the famous kidney-shaped pool is the social heart of the motel, with loungers, drinks and a wonderfully unfussy atmosphere. Free self-parking is another useful rarity in this part of town. SoCo’s restaurants, shops and live music are immediately outside, but West 4th Street’s gay nightlife is across the river, so a rideshare is the sensible option after dark. GayMapper tip: choose Austin Motel for neighbourhood character and poolside fun rather than downtown convenience — it feels much more distinctively Austin than most chain hotels.
4* Hotel Van Zandt

4* Hotel Van Zandt

Hotel Van Zandt taps into Austin’s live-music culture more convincingly than most large downtown hotels. Set in the Rainey Street district, it has regular performances, bold interiors and a lively atmosphere that feels very much part of the city rather than just another international hotel. The fourth-floor rooftop pool is a major attraction, with loungers, cabanas and city views. Geraldine’s combines dinner and cocktails with regular live music, while Brass Poppy downstairs is a moodier spot for late drinks. Café 605 takes care of coffee and lighter daytime options. Rooms are stylish without being overly formal, and higher categories offer views across the city, lake or pool. Rainey Street nightlife is right outside, while the gay bars around West 4th are easiest reached by a short rideshare. GayMapper tip: a particularly good fit if live music and a lively hotel atmosphere are part of what you want from your Austin stay.
5* Four Seasons Austin

5* Four Seasons Austin

Four Seasons manages to feel surprisingly peaceful for a hotel in the middle of Austin. It sits in landscaped grounds beside Lady Bird Lake, with lawns, walking trails and water views behind the hotel while downtown begins just outside the front door. The saltwater outdoor pool overlooks the lake and is surrounded by greenery rather than skyscrapers, while the spa adds eucalyptus steam rooms, treatments and a well-equipped fitness centre. Rooms have either city or lake views, with the polished, understated finish you’d expect from Four Seasons. Ciclo combines Texas ingredients with Latin influences, while Live Oak is a relaxed spot for cocktails overlooking the grounds. The gay bars around West 4th Street are comfortably walkable, although they’re not immediately outside. GayMapper tip: a lovely splurge if you want central Austin convenience with considerably more space and tranquillity than most downtown hotels provide.
5* The Driskill

5* The Driskill

If you’re going to choose one Austin hotel for history, make it The Driskill. Opened in 1886, the grand Romanesque landmark has been part of the city for almost 140 years — and a major 2026 renovation has refreshed it without sanding away everything that makes the building interesting. All 189 rooms and suites have been reworked, alongside the lobby and public spaces. Historic rooms retain original architectural details, while the newly revived Driskill Grill brings a classic steakhouse feel back to the hotel. The equally atmospheric Driskill Bar remains an excellent place for cocktails even if you’re not staying here. You’re right in downtown Austin, close to Sixth Street, the Capitol and within an easy walk of West 4th Street’s LGBTQ+ nightlife. There’s no pool, so this is about history, atmosphere and location rather than resort facilities. GayMapper tip: the obvious choice if anonymous modern luxury leaves you cold — few Austin hotels give you as strong a sense of actually being somewhere.
3* Hyatt Place Downtown

3* Hyatt Place Downtown

Hyatt Place is a very practical choice for a nightlife-focused Austin trip. It sits on East 3rd Street, only a few blocks from the gay bars around West 4th Street, while Sixth Street, the Convention Center and Lady Bird Lake are all easy to reach on foot. The 296 rooms are modern and comfortably sized, with separate sleeping and seating areas, a sofa and mini-fridge. There’s free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour fitness centre and a useful market downstairs for drinks and quick snacks, along with breakfast each morning. It’s a straightforward rather than flashy hotel, but the central location is the real advantage. You can explore most of downtown on foot and still be close enough to wander back from the gay bars at the end of the night. GayMapper tip: particularly handy if you expect to spend several evenings around West 4th Street and don’t want to rely on rideshares afterwards.
4* Westin Austin Downtown

4* Westin Austin Downtown

The rooftop does much of the selling at the Westin. Twenty floors above downtown, Azul combines a swimming pool, bar, cabanas, fire pits and wide city views — particularly appealing when Austin temperatures make sightseeing feel like unnecessarily hard work. The rest of the hotel has caught up nicely after a comprehensive renovation, with redesigned rooms and refreshed public spaces. Downstairs, the new Skipjack Oyster has replaced Stella San Jac, focusing on seafood and oysters, while there’s also a 24-hour fitness studio. Location is another strong point. You’re just off Sixth Street and within a comfortable walk of the LGBTQ+ bars on West 4th, so there’s little need for taxis on a night out. GayMapper tip: a strong summer option — sightseeing in the morning, rooftop pool in the afternoon and the gay bars within walking distance once the sun goes down.
