4* Indigo - East Side Gallery

Hotel Indigo East Side Gallery is a useful alternative if you’d rather experience Berlin’s eastern neighbourhoods than base the whole trip around Schöneberg. It sits directly beside the East Side Gallery and Oberbaumbrücke, with Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg’s restaurants, bars and clubs spreading out on either side of the river.
Rooms are contemporary and colourful, with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and design touches inspired by the surrounding neighbourhood. There’s a fitness room and restaurant, but the real highlight is the rooftop Gallery Rooftop Bar, with excellent views across the Spree and Berlin skyline.
Warschauer Straße station is around ten minutes away, giving you quick S-Bahn and U-Bahn connections towards Alexanderplatz, Mitte and western Berlin.
This isn’t the place to stay if you want Schöneberg’s gay bars outside the door, but it makes much more sense if your Berlin plans lean towards Friedrichshain, Kreuzberg and the city’s more alternative nightlife.
GayMapper tip: a good counterpoint to the Schöneberg-heavy choices — especially for repeat visitors who want to see a different side of Berlin.
Hotels you might like in Berlin
5* Dorint Kurfürstendamm
Dorint Kurfürstendamm is a strong option if you want proper five-star comfort in Berlin’s City West rather than staying directly in the gay district. It’s just off Kurfürstendamm, close to the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Zoo station and some of the city’s best shopping.
Rooms are unusually spacious, starting at around 40 square metres, with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, large bathrooms and plenty of room to unpack properly. There’s a substantial fitness and wellness area with a dry sauna, steam sauna and relaxation facilities, plus restaurant Le Faubourg and a comfortable lounge bar downstairs.
Schöneberg’s gay bars are not directly outside, but they’re easily reached by U-Bahn or a short taxi, and the western end of the scene is walkable if you don’t mind a slightly longer stroll.
GayMapper tip: a good choice when hotel comfort and space come before being right in the middle of the party.
4* Riu Plaza Berlin
Riu Plaza Berlin is a particularly easy base for a gay weekend in Berlin. It sits on Martin-Luther-Straße between Wittenbergplatz and Nollendorfplatz, putting the bars around Fuggerstraße and Motzstraße within a short walk while KaDeWe and the shops of City West are practically on the doorstep.
The hotel itself is modern, spacious and refreshingly straightforward. Rooms come with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a fridge and contemporary bathrooms, with many higher-floor rooms offering wide views across Berlin. There’s also a well-equipped fitness room, restaurant and lobby bar.
Wittenbergplatz U-Bahn station is only a few minutes away, giving you direct connections towards Potsdamer Platz, Alexanderplatz and the eastern side of the city.
GayMapper tip: a great all-rounder if you want the Schöneberg gay scene nearby but prefer a larger modern hotel with plenty of space and consistently good facilities.
3* Mercure Berlin Zentrum
Mercure Hotel Berlin Zentrum is about as conveniently placed as you can get for Schöneberg nightlife without actually sleeping above one of the bars. It’s tucked away on Fuggerstraße itself, with Woof, Prinzknecht, Motzstraße and the rest of the Rainbow District all within a very easy walk.
The hotel is relatively small and uncomplicated, with air-conditioned rooms, free Wi-Fi, tea and coffee facilities and private bathrooms. There’s a breakfast buffet each morning and a small hotel bar for drinks later in the day.
Wittenbergplatz and Nollendorfplatz U-Bahn stations are both nearby, while KaDeWe and the western end of Kurfürstendamm are easily reached on foot.
It isn’t the hotel to choose for a spa weekend or dramatic rooftop views, but for location and generally sensible pricing it makes a lot of sense.
GayMapper tip: particularly useful if your Berlin plans involve rather more nightlife than time spent in the hotel.
5* Hotel de Rome
Hotel de Rome is the option for a properly luxurious Berlin stay with sightseeing rather than nightlife at the centre of the location. It occupies a beautifully restored former bank on Bebelplatz, just off Unter den Linden and within easy walking distance of Museum Island, the Brandenburg Gate and Gendarmenmarkt.
Rooms and suites mix the grandeur of the historic building with polished contemporary interiors. The spa is particularly memorable: the former bank vault now houses a 20-metre indoor swimming pool, alongside a sauna, steam room, treatment rooms and 24-hour gym.
There’s Italian dining downstairs, while the seasonal rooftop terrace looks across central Berlin towards the cathedral and TV Tower.
You’ll need public transport or a taxi for Schöneberg nightlife, but Mitte has plenty of bars, restaurants and culture of its own.
GayMapper tip: a splurge, certainly, but an excellent one if luxury, spa time and central sightseeing are the priorities.
5* Pullman Schweizerhof
Pullman Berlin Schweizerhof is a great choice if you want the facilities of a proper luxury hotel and easy access to both City West and the rest of Berlin. It sits opposite the Zoo and Tiergarten, with KaDeWe and Wittenbergplatz around a ten-minute walk away.
The standout feature is the impressive spa area, which includes one of Berlin’s larger hotel swimming pools, a sauna, relaxation spaces, massage treatments and a well-equipped fitness centre. Rooms are contemporary and comfortable, while there’s also a restaurant, bar and substantial breakfast buffet.
Zoologischer Garten station is nearby, giving you fast transport across the city, and the Tiergarten begins almost outside if you fancy something greener than another afternoon of museums and shopping.
Schöneberg’s gay nightlife is easily accessible, although not close enough for us to call it a doorstep location.
GayMapper tip: particularly good if a pool and proper spa are high on your hotel wish list.
4* Scandic Kurfürstendamm
Scandic Berlin Kurfürstendamm is a good choice if you want easy access to Schöneberg while staying slightly closer to the shopping and restaurants around Kurfürstendamm. The hotel sits beside Augsburger Straße U-Bahn station, with KaDeWe and Wittenbergplatz a few minutes away and the gay bars around Fuggerstraße comfortably walkable.
Rooms have a clean Scandinavian feel and include free Wi-Fi, fridges and modern bathrooms. There’s a gym on the sixth floor, a green courtyard and a particularly good breakfast buffet with plenty of vegan, vegetarian and allergy-friendly options. Snacks and drinks are also available from the 24-hour shop.
Berlin Zoo and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church are around ten minutes away on foot, while the U-Bahn outside makes the rest of Berlin easy to reach.
GayMapper tip: especially good if you like the idea of Schöneberg nightlife nearby but want a slightly calmer hotel base.
