Hotel Volksschule is one for travellers who don’t need to be in the middle of Hamburg at all times. Set inside a beautifully converted former school in the quieter Hamm district, it has much more character than you might expect at the price. Rauhes Haus U-Bahn station is only a few minutes away, so getting into central Hamburg, St Georg or St Pauli is straightforward even though none of them are on your doorstep. Free parking is another unusual bonus if you’re arriving by car. The historic school details give the hotel a genuinely distinctive feel, while the quiet residential location can be rather welcome after a long day — or late night — in the city. GayMapper tip: a good-value alternative if you’re happy trading walkability to the gay bars for character, quieter nights and easy U-Bahn access.

Holiday Inn – the niu, Fusion Hamburg St. Georg puts you on Steindamm, right in the lively, multicultural side of St Georg and only a short walk from Lange Reihe and Hamburg’s main gay bars. The neighbourhood is particularly good for inexpensive Turkish, Middle Eastern and Asian food, while Hauptbahnhof is around eight minutes away on foot. That gives you excellent connections to the airport, harbour, St Pauli and pretty much everywhere else in the city. The hotel has a colourful contemporary feel and makes a good base if you’re more interested in exploring Hamburg than paying for lots of facilities you probably won’t use. GayMapper tip: a useful mid-budget option if you want St Georg nightlife close by but prefer staying a few streets away from the busiest part of Lange Reihe.

Barceló Hamburg is particularly well placed if sightseeing and shopping matter more to you than staying right inside the gay neighbourhood. You’re close to the Binnenalster, Mönckebergstraße and Jungfernstieg, with the Rathaus and historic centre comfortably walkable. St Georg is still easy to reach — you can walk towards Lange Reihe for the gay bars or simply use the excellent transport around Hauptbahnhof and Jungfernstieg. There are also plenty of restaurants and cafés close to the hotel itself. The look is contemporary and fairly grown-up, making this a good middle ground between Hamburg’s inexpensive station hotels and the grand five-star properties around the Alster. GayMapper tip: a good couples’ choice if you want a smart central hotel and expect to divide your time between sightseeing, restaurants and nights out rather than basing the whole trip around the gay scene.

Reichshof Hotel Hamburg has one of those locations that makes a city break wonderfully uncomplicated. It’s opposite the Hauptbahnhof and just around the corner from Lange Reihe, so some of Hamburg’s best-known LGBTQ+ bars and cafés are only a few minutes away. The hotel itself has rather more personality than its station location might suggest. The grand 1910 building retains beautiful Art Deco details, particularly around the lobby and Bar 1910, where cocktails and live music make staying in for one drink surprisingly tempting. Shopping, the Kunsthalle and Alster are all close by, while the Hauptbahnhof gives you direct trains and U-Bahn services across the entire city. Pyjama Park Reeperbahn is very much for travellers who want Hamburg nightlife outside the front door. You’re right on the Reeperbahn, with WunderBar and the other LGBTQ+ venues around St Pauli within easy walking distance, as well as more bars, clubs and late-night food than anyone realistically needs. The hotel-hostel mix works well for friends and budget-conscious travellers, with private rooms rather than forcing you into dorm life. The building itself has plenty of St Pauli character too, with historic photographs reflecting different eras of the neighbourhood. Reeperbahn S-Bahn station is nearby, while the harbour and Landungsbrücken are easily walkable when daylight eventually returns. GayMapper tip: a great value choice if nights out are high on the agenda and you don’t expect the Reeperbahn to be particularly interested in an early bedtime.

ARCOTEL Rubin Hamburg gets one of the most useful locations on the list for a gay weekend. It sits on Steindamm in St Georg, with Lange Reihe, M&V, the cafés and other LGBTQ+ venues all within an easy walk. Hauptbahnhof is close enough to make airport arrivals painless, while the Alster, shopping streets and central sights are equally straightforward to reach. The area around Steindamm is lively and multicultural rather than polished, with excellent restaurants and food spots tucked between the hotels and shops. Back at the hotel there’s a sauna and fitness area, while the bar is handy if you want one final drink without extending the night any further. GayMapper tip: a strong all-rounder if you want the St Georg scene close by but prefer a full-service four-star hotel to a hostel or budget property.
