Reichshof Hotel Hamburg has one of those locations that makes a city break wonderfully uncomplicated. It’s opposite the Hauptbahnhof and just around the corner from Lange Reihe, so some of Hamburg’s best-known LGBTQ+ bars and cafés are only a few minutes away. The hotel itself has rather more personality than its station location might suggest. The grand 1910 building retains beautiful Art Deco details, particularly around the lobby and Bar 1910, where cocktails and live music make staying in for one drink surprisingly tempting. Shopping, the Kunsthalle and Alster are all close by, while the Hauptbahnhof gives you direct trains and U-Bahn services across the entire city. Conrad Hamburg occupies the historic Levantehaus on Mönckebergstraße, putting you between the Hauptbahnhof, Rathaus and Hamburg’s main shopping streets in one of the most convenient luxury locations in the city. The hotel reopened after a major renovation and now feels completely contemporary while retaining plenty of the building’s original character. The large spa and indoor pool are particularly appealing when Hamburg’s weather is being enthusiastically Hamburg. St Georg and the gay bars around Lange Reihe are walkable from here, although you’re far enough away that the hotel still feels firmly like a central luxury stay rather than a nightlife choice. GayMapper tip: ideal if you want five-star comfort and easy sightseeing while keeping St Georg close enough for a spontaneous night out.

Motel One Hamburg-Alster is towards the quieter end of St Georg, giving you the advantage of the gay neighbourhood without putting you right beside the Hauptbahnhof bustle. Lange Reihe and its LGBTQ+ cafés and bars are easily walkable, while Lohmühlenstraße U-Bahn station is practically outside for quick trips into the centre or across to St Pauli. The Alster is nearby too if the morning after calls for fresh air rather than another coffee. Rooms follow Motel One’s familiar compact formula, but the large lounge and bar downstairs are pleasant enough that you don’t feel confined to them. GayMapper tip: particularly good if you want the St Georg gay scene within walking distance but would rather sleep somewhere slightly calmer.

Holiday Inn – the niu, Fusion Hamburg St. Georg puts you on Steindamm, right in the lively, multicultural side of St Georg and only a short walk from Lange Reihe and Hamburg’s main gay bars. The neighbourhood is particularly good for inexpensive Turkish, Middle Eastern and Asian food, while Hauptbahnhof is around eight minutes away on foot. That gives you excellent connections to the airport, harbour, St Pauli and pretty much everywhere else in the city. The hotel has a colourful contemporary feel and makes a good base if you’re more interested in exploring Hamburg than paying for lots of facilities you probably won’t use. GayMapper tip: a useful mid-budget option if you want St Georg nightlife close by but prefer staying a few streets away from the busiest part of Lange Reihe.

Generator Hamburg sits directly beside the Hauptbahnhof, which is unusually handy for both arriving in the city and getting around once you’re here. Better still for LGBTQ+ visitors, Lange Reihe and the heart of St Georg’s gay scene are only a short walk away. There’s a sociable bar downstairs with DJ nights, karaoke and events, and you can choose between dorms and private rooms depending on how enthusiastically you want to embrace the hostel experience. Solo travellers should find it especially easy to meet people here. The immediate area around the station is busy and a little rough around the edges, but walk a few minutes towards Lange Reihe and the atmosphere changes quickly to cafés, restaurants and rainbow flags. Hotel Volksschule is one for travellers who don’t need to be in the middle of Hamburg at all times. Set inside a beautifully converted former school in the quieter Hamm district, it has much more character than you might expect at the price. Rauhes Haus U-Bahn station is only a few minutes away, so getting into central Hamburg, St Georg or St Pauli is straightforward even though none of them are on your doorstep. Free parking is another unusual bonus if you’re arriving by car. The historic school details give the hotel a genuinely distinctive feel, while the quiet residential location can be rather welcome after a long day — or late night — in the city.
