3* Uptown Inn by Vantaggio

819 University Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103, United States

3* Uptown Inn by Vantaggio

Sometimes location really is the whole story. Uptown Inn by Vantaggio Suites sits directly on University Avenue in Hillcrest, placing some of San Diego’s best-known LGBTQ venues within minutes: Rich’s for dancing, Flicks for drinks and videos, Gossip Grill and plenty more.

The recently renovated studios are compact but smart, with fridges, work space and free WiFi. Longer stays are made easier by a shared full kitchen and guest laundry, while there’s also a 24-hour fitness centre and paid secure parking. It feels more like a simple urban aparthotel than a conventional full-service property – which suits the neighbourhood nicely.

Balboa Park and the Zoo are nearby too, so staying here doesn’t mean choosing nightlife over sightseeing.

GayMapper tip: If the gay scene is your main reason for staying in San Diego, this is the rare hotel where you can genuinely forget about rideshares for the evening.

4* Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

4* Marriott Gaslamp Quarter

Baseball fans barely need directions from San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter – Petco Park is right there. Everyone else gets the same advantage in different form: restaurants, Gaslamp nightlife, the convention centre and waterfront are all easily walkable. The real reason to remember this Marriott is 22 floors up. ALTITUDE Sky Lounge looks across Downtown, the bay and directly into Petco Park, making it one of the better hotel rooftops in the city. Downstairs, Soleil@k handles breakfast and Latitude Lounge takes over for cocktails and casual food later on. There’s also no resort fee, which feels increasingly refreshing in California. Hillcrest’s LGBTQ nightlife is a quick drive north rather than part of the immediate neighbourhood. GayMapper tip: Time ALTITUDE for a Padres game or sunset – even non-baseball people may suddenly develop an interest in the view.
3* Club Wyndham Inn at the Park

3* Club Wyndham Inn at the Park

The clue is in the name: Club Wyndham Inn at the Park sits right on the western edge of Balboa Park, making museums, gardens and the San Diego Zoo unusually easy to reach without treating them as a day trip. Inside, things are much more apartment-like than hotel-like. The large studios and one-bedroom suites come with proper kitchens and dining space, while the panoramic rooftop terrace is a lovely place to take in the skyline. There’s also a fitness centre for anyone who still has energy after walking around Balboa Park all day. Hillcrest begins just north of here, and the main LGBTQ nightlife along University Avenue is comfortably reachable on foot. That makes this one of the few San Diego hotels where both sightseeing and gay nightlife genuinely work without constantly calling a car. GayMapper tip: The kitchen-equipped suites are particularly useful for longer stays – and rooftop sunset drinks are considerably cheaper when you bring your own.
3* The Empress Hotel

3* The Empress Hotel

La Jolla makes a convincing argument for spending at least part of a San Diego trip away from Downtown altogether. The Empress Hotel sits right in the village, with restaurants, galleries, coastal walks and La Jolla Cove all within an easy stroll. Rooms have recently been refreshed, with fridges, coffee facilities and larger suites available when you want more space. A daily hot breakfast is included in the destination fee, along with afternoon refreshments and fitness-centre access, while the hotel’s Beach Concierge can sort you out with chairs and umbrellas for the coast. Manhattan of La Jolla downstairs covers Italian dinners when you don’t feel like going far. San Diego’s gay nightlife in Hillcrest is across town, so this is very much the beach-and-La-Jolla choice. GayMapper tip: Come here for mornings by the water and seals at the Cove – save Hillcrest for one planned night out rather than trying to commute back and forth.
4* The Pearl Hotel

4* The Pearl Hotel

The Pearl Hotel understands the assignment: take a 1959 Point Loma motel, keep the oyster-shaped pool and mid-century bones, then turn the whole thing into somewhere you actually want to hang around. There are just 23 individually styled rooms, all arranged around that original saltwater pool. Ponyboy handles seasonal food and cocktails, and Wednesday night “Dive In” movies are still projected beside the water – one of those little details that makes the hotel memorable rather than merely photogenic. Point Loma puts you handy for Ocean Beach, the harbour and airport, while Downtown is an easy drive. Hillcrest’s main LGBTQ nightlife is farther inland, so The Pearl is more suited to travellers who want San Diego neighbourhood life and coastal exploring with a night or two in the gay bars. GayMapper tip: Stay in on Wednesday – dinner, cocktails and a movie beside the pool is exactly the sort of evening The Pearl does best.
4* Indigo Gaslamp Quarter

4* Indigo Gaslamp Quarter

Hotel Indigo San Diego-Gaslamp Quarter has changed quite a bit since the old GayMapper description – and for the better. The East Village location still puts Petco Park practically outside, but the current food and drink setup now includes Table 509 Bar & Kitchen and Borrego, a desert-inspired rooftop bar with skyline views. Rooms keep the colourful boutique feel, and the hotel remains pet-friendly with a fitness centre and plenty of Downtown energy around it. The Gaslamp’s restaurants and bars are easily walkable, as are the convention centre and waterfront. Hillcrest is a quick rideshare north, so this works particularly well when you want San Diego’s Downtown attractions by day but still plan to dip into the LGBTQ nightlife rather than live directly inside it. GayMapper tip: Borrego at sunset followed by Hillcrest later on makes for a very easy two-neighbourhood evening.
