Part historic bank, part slender modern tower, One King West Hotel & Residence is one of downtown Toronto’s more interesting places to stay. The original Dominion Bank building dates from 1914, while the tower above provides some terrific city and lake views. Accommodation is all-suite, and many rooms have kitchenettes with microwaves, fridges and dishwashers, making this particularly comfortable for longer stays. The 17th-floor fitness centre adds panoramic views, a whirlpool and separate saunas, while Teller’s Bistro & Bar cleverly incorporates original bank teller wickets into its interior. King subway station is steps away and there’s direct access to the PATH underground network. Toronto’s main LGBTQ+ nightlife around Church and Wellesley is north of here, so the subway is usually the easiest option for an evening out. There’s some proper old-school Toronto glamour behind the doors of The Omni King Edward Hotel. Open since 1903, this landmark was the city’s first luxury hotel, and its grand public rooms and ornate ballrooms still provide plenty of historic character despite the thoroughly modern guest accommodation. The 301 rooms are spacious, while the 6,000-square-foot Mokara Spa adds seven treatment rooms, a salon and separate steam or sauna facilities. There’s also a substantial fitness centre, traditional afternoon tea and several options for food and drinks. The King Street location works beautifully for St Lawrence Market, the financial district and Old Toronto. Church-Wellesley Village, where most of Toronto’s LGBTQ+ nightlife is concentrated, is further north but easy to reach using the subway. Space is the real luxury at Town Inn Suites. Accommodation ranges from roomy studios to one- and two-bedroom suites of up to around 900 square feet, with separate living areas and kitchens or kitchenettes in many categories — particularly useful for longer stays, groups or anyone who doesn’t want every meal in a restaurant. Then there’s the location. The hotel is actually on Church Street at the northern end of Church-Wellesley Village, so Toronto’s main concentration of LGBTQ+ bars, clubs and community venues is just a short walk down the street. Bloor-Yonge subway station and the restaurants and shopping of Yorkville are also nearby. Current facilities include a guest lounge, breakfast options, covered parking, laundry services and 24-hour reception. Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel is big — very big — but its scale comes with facilities that smaller downtown hotels simply can’t match. The standout is Toronto’s largest heated indoor-outdoor hotel pool, joined by a newly renovated fitness centre and a surprisingly peaceful 2.5-acre waterfall garden. Recent updates have given the enormous lobby a much fresher feel too. Dual Citizen handles coffee, casual food and drinks, while intimate 43 Down is the place for cocktails. Club-level rooms bring access to the 43rd-floor lounge with breakfast, evening appetisers and sweeping skyline views. Outside, you’re opposite Nathan Phillips Square and close to Eaton Centre, Queen West and the PATH. Church-Wellesley Village and Toronto’s main LGBTQ+ nightlife are around a 20-minute walk away, or easily reached by subway. If you want to be close to the gay nightlife but still have a pool and spa back at the hotel, Holiday Inn Toronto Downtown Centre is a very easy fit. It sits on Carlton Street near Yonge, with the bars and clubs of Church-Wellesley Village only a short walk east and College subway station virtually on the doorstep. The facilities are unusually strong for this price bracket. There’s a heated indoor pool, Signature Spa and a recently renovated fitness centre, while Thirty Restaurant handles meals throughout the day and Thirty Lounge is handy for a drink before going out. Rooms are contemporary and practical, with mini-fridges, coffee facilities and free Wi-Fi. You can also walk to Eaton Centre and Sankofa Square without needing public transport. GayMapper tip: This is a particularly useful all-rounder — close enough to walk home from Church Street, but with more hotel facilities than many similarly located options.

Toronto feels more neighbourhood-like around the Annex and Yorkville, and Kimpton Saint George Hotel makes good use of that setting. Its interiors mix natural materials, rich textures and quirky artwork, creating something warmer and more individual than the typical large downtown chain hotel. You’re surrounded by restaurants and cafés, with the Royal Ontario Museum, University of Toronto and Yorkville shopping within an easy walk. Church-Wellesley Village and its main LGBTQ+ nightlife are further east along Bloor, but straightforward to reach by subway from nearby St George station. The usual Kimpton extras add plenty of appeal: morning coffee, a hosted evening social hour, complimentary bicycles, yoga mats in the rooms and a 24-hour fitness centre. The Fortunate Fox downstairs is a relaxed neighbourhood gastropub open late.
