Allow around half an hour and take water — crossing sand takes rather longer than Google Maps would have you believe. The hotel itself is adults only and firmly at the more luxurious end of the market, with a quiet resort atmosphere that feels a world away from the Yumbo, even though the nightlife is still easy to reach by taxi. Sol Barbacan remains one of our favourite Gran Canaria choices because it works brilliantly for a longer holiday. You’re only a few minutes from the Yumbo, but the large gardens and bungalow areas give the place a surprisingly relaxed resort feel. You can choose between apartments in the main building or bungalows dotted through the gardens, with the latter giving you a private rooftop sun terrace. Multiple pools — including an adults-only one — make it very easy to spend a lazy day here before heading into the Yumbo later. It’s a mainstream resort and welcomes families too, but the location and spacious accommodation have made it consistently popular with gay travellers. GayMapper tip: an excellent all-rounder if you want nightlife close by but also enough space and facilities to enjoy a proper resort holiday.
Hotel Nayra - Adults Only is practically next door to the Yumbo, yet somehow manages to feel calm once you’re inside. That combination has made it a long-standing favourite with LGBTQ+ travellers who want the nightlife close without actually sleeping above it. The design is contemporary and low-key, with rooms opening towards the pool and gardens. There are only 46 rooms across the property, so it feels much more intimate than the large package-holiday hotels elsewhere in Playa del Inglés. Staff and service get consistently warm feedback, and breakfast is included. The Maspalomas Dunes are sand dunes located on the south coast of the island of Gran Canaria. There is no particular focal point for cruising, but you'll find many people sunbathing and waiting in the bushy areas. Get there by entering the dunes using the path next to the Riu Palace in Playa del Ingles, then just follow the trail of guys along to the gay beach. Cruising anytime between sunrise and sunset - be careful not to get stuck there after dark. The dunes are a 404-hectare (1,000-acre) area of the municipality of San Bartolome de Tirajana and they have been protected as a nature reserve since 1987. They were formed by sand from the bottom of the ocean, during the last ice age, when the wind blew the sand towards the coast of the island. With all this history in mind, please help to protect the dunes for future generations of the LGBTQ+ community by treating the area with respect, only entering permitted areas and taking all litter away with you
