For a nightlife-led trip, Ramada Plaza by Wyndham West Hollywood Hotel & Suites gets one important thing very right: you’re directly on Santa Monica Boulevard, with many of WeHo’s LGBTQ+ bars and clubs within an easy walk. The hotel itself is straightforward and a little old-school compared with West Hollywood’s design hotels, but that can translate into noticeably better rates in a neighbourhood where rooms are rarely cheap. There’s an outdoor pool and fitness room, and you’ve got restaurants, cafés and everyday shops immediately around you. The central WeHo location also makes Beverly Hills, Melrose and the Sunset Strip relatively easy to reach. Hotel Erwin throws you straight into Venice Beach, with the boardwalk and sand less than a minute from the lobby. This is LA at its most colourful — skaters, surfers, street performers, bars and plenty of characters all sharing the same few blocks. Many rooms have balconies and ocean views, but the rooftop is the real highlight. Kassi Venice Beach combines cocktails and Mediterranean-inspired food with some excellent Pacific sunsets, so you don’t necessarily need to leave the hotel for a good evening. Abbott Kinney is nearby for shopping and restaurants, while Santa Monica is easily reached up the coast. West Hollywood is a completely different excursion. Petit Ermitage has always been one of West Hollywood’s more eccentric hotels, and thankfully nobody seems interested in sanding off the edges. The all-suite property is packed with artwork, fireplaces and richly layered interiors that feel much more private club than corporate hotel. Upstairs is the real attraction: a secluded rooftop garden, saltwater pool, cabanas and guest-only dining create a little world of their own above the city. You’re still firmly in West Hollywood, with the Santa Monica Boulevard gay scene comfortably walkable when you decide to rejoin civilisation. GayMapper tip: ideal for a romantic or slightly decadent weekend when you want nightlife nearby but also a hotel tempting enough to cancel some plans.

Staying aboard The Queen Mary is really a trip within a trip. The historic ocean liner remains permanently moored on the Long Beach waterfront, with original Art Deco details, wood-panelled staterooms, exhibitions and guided tours bringing its transatlantic history to life. Long Beach has its own LGBTQ+ community and nightlife, so there’s plenty to do without heading north every evening. Just remember that this is not a sensible base for West Hollywood or central LA sightseeing — Los Angeles distances are very real, and you’re a long way south. Restaurants, bars and events aboard the ship mean you can quite happily make the Queen Mary part of the destination rather than simply somewhere to sleep. The Abbey, Micky’s and the rest of the Santa Monica Boulevard strip are only a short walk north. The Hoxton, Downtown LA makes a convincing case for staying in DTLA rather than automatically defaulting to West Hollywood. Its historic Broadway building sits close to restaurants, theatres, the Fashion District and South Park, with Metro stations within walking distance. The ground floor is lively throughout the day, while the rooftop pool gives you skyline views and a place to switch off above the traffic. Rooms are stylish but intentionally compact, so much of the experience happens in the hotel’s shared spaces and restaurants. WeHo is a journey from here, but Downtown has its own bars and nightlife and works well if your LA plans stretch far beyond the gay strip. Few LA hotels embrace the full California beach fantasy quite as enthusiastically as Shutters on the Beach. Ocean Lodge Santa Monica Beach Hotel has been sitting on Ocean Avenue since the 1950s, and its retro motel-style character is part of the appeal. More importantly, you’re just a few minutes from Santa Monica Pier and the sand. Rooms have been refreshed but remain fairly simple, with fridges and coffee makers rather than luxury-hotel extras. Restaurants line the surrounding streets, Venice is an easy trip south and the beachfront location means you can enjoy plenty of LA without getting into a car every morning. West Hollywood is another matter entirely, so don’t choose this expecting spontaneous nights on Santa Monica Boulevard. Hotel 850 SVB feels more like staying in an exceptionally stylish West Hollywood guesthouse than checking into a conventional four-star hotel. Sitting right where Beverly Hills meets West Hollywood, Hotel Beverly Terrace gives you a quieter neighbourhood base without putting the gay bars too far away. Chamberlain West Hollywood hides on a residential street between Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard, which gives you a surprisingly peaceful base for somewhere so close to the action. If beach time matters more than being close to West Hollywood, Hampton Inn & Suites Santa Monica makes life very easy. Santa Monica Pier and the beach are only a few blocks away, Third Street Promenade is practically around the corner and the E Line stops close to the hotel. That rail connection is genuinely useful in a city famous for making visitors sit in traffic, although getting to the gay bars in WeHo will still take some planning. Venice is much easier to reach if you want bars and nightlife closer to the coast. There’s an outdoor pool and hot tub, and the included hot breakfast helps make this one of the more practical Santa Monica options. Silver Lake offers a very different version of queer Los Angeles from West Hollywood, and Silver Lake Pool & Inn puts you right in the middle of that more neighbourhood-based scene. Akbar is only around a seven-minute walk away, while Sunset Junction is full of independent cafés, restaurants, bars and shops. The Vermont/Santa Monica Metro station is also within walking distance when you want to head further across the city. The hotel itself is small and relaxed, with just over 50 rooms arranged around a leafy outdoor pool. Marco Polo serves Italian food and cocktails beside the pool, giving the place enough of a local following that it never feels sealed off from the neighbourhood. The Delphi Hotel occupies one of Downtown LA’s best-known mid-century buildings, formerly The Standard, and still carries some of that slightly cooler-than-average DTLA attitude. You’re in the Financial District, close to museums, restaurants and several Metro lines, with Bunker Hill and the Broad easily reached. The rooftop pool and bar give you somewhere to escape the streets below, while the building’s 1950s architecture adds far more character than most downtown hotels. This is a central-LA choice rather than a WeHo nightlife choice, so expect to travel when heading to the main gay strip.
